BiPolar Power Source with Zero Crossover Distortion

This bipolar power source with zero crossover distortion was developed to control beam positioning magnets in particle accelerators and scientific laser applications.

This power source is a high precision linear amplifier that connects to and turns an ordinary DC unipolar voltage source into a precise bipolar power source with zero crossover distortion.  This class AB linear amplifier is rated at 160A @ 25V and contains less than 5mV p-p voltage ripple. Used in conjunction with an “off the shelf” unipolar voltage source, the supply produces a precision bipolar output capable of sourcing +/- 160A with a compliance of +/- 25 volts into a load.

Air cooled and housed in a 3U rack mount enclosure, the APS20 is easily configured for new or existing applications. As with all APS power products, all critical components are monitored and protected against failures due to overvoltage, overcurrent or over temperature. The front panel displays indicate output voltage and current, heatsink temperature, fuse failure and fault status.

APS supplied (2) 100-6758 air cooled, 3200A, 3 phase rectifiers to provide the 850VDC bus required by the VFD motor drives. We also provided (2) IAP2KD17 dynamic brake choppers to limit the DC bus voltage during the descent of the drawwork motor. The rectifier and brake choppers are standard APS products.

Model # APE6D7 provides up to 1500 Amps DC output (max continuous) at 3,300 VDC. The unit has been ruggedized to withstand high shock and vibration. The customer integrates their own field-replaceable fan assembly to provide airflow to match the dimensions of our insulated frame, which directs airflow evenly across all heatsink surfaces for optimal thermal management.
